Our Young Adult Transitions program is designed for individuals ages 17 to 29.

Neurofeedback Therapy for Young Adults

As part of Engage’s ongoing commitment to being at the forefront of young adult transitional programming, we have partnered with Dr. Ingrid Boveda of COGenuity and The Hive Psychological Services to provide on-site brain mapping and neurofeedback services to students.

Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback for Young Adults

Brain mapping (also called a qEEG or Quantitative Electroencephalogram) is a diagnostic tool that measures electrical activity in the brain in the form of brainwave patterns. The scan of brain wave activity helps assess areas of dysregulation that contribute to a persons’ struggles. This helps us learn about the ways the person’s brain is/isn’t helping them (for example, if their brain is not helping them manage their emotions/executive functions. etc.).

This helps tremendously in setting treatment expectations and goals, and informs what neurofeedback can do. A qEEG Brain Map also informs potential neurofeedback protocols that can help the person alter their brainwave patterns in a way that can mitigate or totally remediate these symptoms.

What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that trains the brain to self-regulate and function more efficiently. Neurofeedback involves real-time monitoring and feedback of brainwave activity to help individuals regulate and optimize their brain function.

Neurofeedback capitalizes on the brain’s pattern-learning abilities (e.g. “neuroplasticity”) to “train” the brain and reinforce desired brain states. When your brain receives feedback that it’s doing what you want it to do, it starts making more of that pattern. This way we can essentially “retrain” the brain to help it function more optimally (e.g. making it easier to manage emotions, etc.).

Using real-time EEG (electroencephalography) sensors, it measures brainwave activity and provides visual or auditory feedback, helping individuals modify their brainwave patterns. By rewarding desired brain activity (e.g., increased focus or relaxation), it reinforces healthy neural functioning.

Commonly used to treat ADHD, anxiety, depression, and PTSD, neurofeedback enhances cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and stress management.

Over multiple sessions, the brain learns to maintain optimal states, reducing symptoms without medication. Though research is ongoing, studies suggest it improves attention, sleep, and mood. Safe and drug-free, neurofeedback is gaining popularity in mental health and peak performance training.

How Neurofeedback Supports Mental Health and Independence

Neurofeedback is a powerful tool for enhancing mental health and fostering independence by training the brain to self-regulate. By providing real-time feedback on brainwave activity, it helps individuals develop healthier neural patterns, reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD.

Over time, this promotes emotional stability, sharper focus, and better stress management without relying on medication.

For those struggling with mental health challenges, neurofeedback strengthens self-control, enabling them to manage their condition more effectively. Improved cognitive function supports decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional resilience, leading to greater autonomy. Additionally, neurofeedback can enhance sleep quality and reduce impulsivity, further contributing to independence in daily life.

Neurofeedback empowers individuals to take an active role in their mental well-being. Optimizing brain function helps people regain control over their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, fostering long-term mental health and self-sufficiency.

Who Benefits from Neurofeedback?

From a mental health perspective, neurofeedback helps:

ADHD

Individuals with ADHD

(improving focus and reducing impulsivity)

PTSD

(easing trauma responses)

Anxiety

Anxiety and depression

(promoting emotional regulation)

Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

(improving focus and reducing impulsivity)

Why Choose Engage for Neurofeedback?

At Engage we support the needs of young adults as they learn and develop the life and communication skills to develop their independence. Engage offers structured autonomy—high support without creating dependence. For us, connection is the Intervention and the Outcome.

We offer neurofeedback as a complementary therapy to our attachment-based therapeutic approach, supporting relief and improvement from mental health conditions.

Personalized Support and Clinical Expertise

We have a very committed focus on supporting each of our young adults with a personalized approach. Our neurofeedback therapy is offered by qualified staff, who are experienced in delivering this therapy.

Integrating Neurofeedback with Transitional Living

For us, connection is the Intervention and the Outcome. By learning to seek and offer support, maintain individuality, and build mutual trust, young adults set the stage for both personal autonomy and lifelong relational fulfillment.

Neurofeedback fits well with our model supporting young adults in their transitional living journey, including outdoor adventure programs to freely move to a more secure sense of self and their relationships. In doing so, our young adults set the stage for both personal autonomy and lifelong relational fulfillment.

How Does the Process Work?

Students start with a brain map. Then Dr. Boveda meets with the parents, therapist, and student via Zoom. They go over the findings and determine if neurofeedback is likely to be an effective modality, as well as to identify the goals or targets of the sessions.

Neurofeedback is typically done twice per week, and another brain map is done to compare differences and assess progress after every 20 sessions. Dr. Boveda, as well as her team of technicians, are also available to meet to answer any questions that come up along the way.
