To best support our young adults, at Engage we provide an integrative approach to psychiatry that goes beyond traditional medication management. Our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner offers a range of ways to provide the best possible personalized care adapted to the needs of each young adult.
We are not restricted to a “50-minute hour” in our appointments. Sessions may be of variable length in response to the needs of each individual.
We conduct full assessments of mental health to inform individualized courses of treatment.
Parents may be involved as needed in consultations (typically by phone) to include their perspectives and provide counseling about their young adults and for them around treatment options.
We have an integrative approach to medication that goes beyond basic psychiatric medications such as the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. We are on top of the full range of choices available today and prescribe appropriate to need.
We use genetic testing to diagnostically assess the predisposition to certain conditions and levels of certain chemicals, such as the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. We then adjust medications as required.
We also look at the COM2 gene to determine how well a client is able to break down the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and assess if supplements may help. COM2 plays a role in regulating dopamine levels in the brain, which is important for various functions like mood, cognition, and behavior.
Variations in COM2 have been linked to some mental health conditions, as well as cognitive functions like working memory and executive function.
Supplements may be prescribed for a variety of reasons. One is to slow down the action of certain hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.
Based on observations in the course of diagnosis and treatment and the genetic testing, we make recommendations to our dietician who then considers them in dietary plans with our young adults.
We also provide holistic therapies.
