Integrated Therapy for Young Adults in Cedar City, UT

At Engage we offer a highly integrated approach to therapy, offering individual, group and family therapy, as well as parent coaching. Our primary goal is to help young adults move forward to independence with connection.

Individual Therapy for Young Adults

Unlike traditional outpatient therapy, at Engage, therapy is dynamic, responsive, and woven into the young adult’s daily experience. Our licensed therapists don’t just meet weekly with each client for individual sessions; they’re embedded in the environment, providing clinical oversight, consultation, and direction across the entire team.

Because our therapists are closely connected to the daily rhythms of the community, they’re able to identify when a young adult is struggling and respond in real time—whether that means adjusting therapeutic goals, coordinating with life coaches, or intervening in the moment.

This dynamic and team-based approach ensures that therapy is not confined to an office or a once-a-week session, but woven into the fabric of the young adult’s experience at Engage.

We have based our approach on two therapy models:

Strengths-based developmental model
Solution-focused therapeutic “here and now” model

Strengths-Based Developmental Model

The approach is based on the young adult’s needs and what they are going through. It emphasizes identifying and building on residents’ existing strengths, resources, and goals rather than focusing solely on problems or deficits.

The therapist begins by introducing herself and briefly explaining the approaches used. The young adult introduces themself. Then the therapist begins a process of asking the young adult to identify and amplify their skills, talents, and past successes.

Positive reinforcement is shared by the therapist to build self-efficacy in the young adult. The motivation is to help the young adult move forward and support their goals to do that. As opposed to the goal being “Get out of Engage”, it’s “Get therapy to get me where I want to go”.

Solution-Focused Techniques

In this approach, goals are collaboratively set, focusing on clear, achievable, short-term goals. The therapist may then explore times when the issues were less severe—how was that achieved?

The therapist may ask questions such as  “On a scale of 1-10, how close are you to your goal?”, or a miracle question: “If your problem disappeared overnight, what would be different?”.

By working through this material, the young adult, together with the therapist, develops insights and clarity about how to achieve their goals.

Engage: An Integrated Therapeutic Community

Therapy is integrated into the fabric of the Engage program. Sessions are not limited to one time per week as the therapists at Engage are available during the week as needed.

How We Provide Individual Therapy

Each young adult is assigned a primary therapist who meets with them weekly. These sessions are focused, goal-oriented, and adapted to the individual’s stage of change and level of insight.

The therapist helps the young adult make sense of their experiences, challenge avoidant patterns, build emotional regulation skills, and take ownership of their progress.

Our therapists are all licensed, seasoned clinicians trained and skilled in trauma, attachment, young adults, ADHD and ASD. They are an active member of the Engage Community and are available throughout the day for check-ins.

Each therapist has their own case manager and they work in tandem with their young adults.

Resident-Centered and Empowering

As a therapeutic community, residents are the center of all that we do. They are the experts in their own lives, while the therapists facilitate self-discovery, focusing on the young adults’ empowerment, autonomy and personal responsibility.

Future-Oriented

As a present-centred therapy model, our therapists shift the focus from past trauma to future possibilities and how to get there. They assist the young adults to develop practical coping strategies and problem-solving skills

Brief and Action-Oriented

Our model takes a brief therapy approach with short-term structured interventions with measurable progress. Our therapists encourage small, incremental changes leading to larger shifts.
This model has been proven effective especially with these results in our young adults:

This approach fosters hope, motivation, and tangible progress, making it ideal for young adults in transitional residential care.

Group Therapy

Group therapy offers young adults a supportive space to share experiences, gain insights, and develop coping skills with peers facing similar challenges. Led by a licensed therapist, sessions focus on issues like anxiety, depression, relationships, and self-esteem.

We offer group 4 times per week. Group is facilitated by at least one licensed therapist. Group themes are:

Coping Skills
Healthy Habits
Mindfulness and Self-Regulation
Process group

We want our young adults to learn from each other, practice vulnerability in sharing and receiving feedback, reflect on their patterns, grow in their understanding of themselves and others, and create healthy and realistic goals.

Participants benefit from mutual feedback, reducing feelings of isolation while fostering connection and accountability. Structured activities and open discussions encourage emotional growth and resilience. This collaborative approach helps participants build communication skills, confidence, and healthier behaviors.

By engaging in group therapy, young adults often find validation, encouragement, and practical strategies to navigate life’s difficulties effectively.

Family Therapy

Family therapy is directed at supporting the family system in the goals of the young adult. Sessions start off once a week via Zoom and then the schedule is adjusted based on the needs of the young adult and their family. These sessions are designed to:

Improve communication
Repair ruptures
Realign roles and boundaries

Family therapy helps young adults and their parents improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. Sessions, led by your primary therapist, address issues like independence, boundaries, and emotional support. By fostering understanding and empathy, family members learn healthier ways to interact and collaborate.

Family therapy is especially beneficial during transitions, such as moving out, or career changes, ensuring both young adults and parents navigate challenges together.

Parent Coaching

Parent coaching is a supportive service designed to help parents navigate the challenges of guiding their emerging adult children. Parent coaches are separate from the young adults’ primary therapists and provide a complementary service to parents.

Coaches provide strategies to improve communication, set boundaries, and foster independence while maintaining a healthy parent-child relationship.
