Latest/popular Insights

A lot of young adults watch porn. However, when they feel they can’t stop, even when they want to, that’s porn addiction (experts call it compulsive problematic pornography use (PPU)). Basically, it’s when your brain gets hooked on the process—the chase, the hit, the whole cycle.

This is a form of process addiction which refers to excessive sexual thoughts, desires, urges, or behaviors.  It stops being a casual thing and starts controlling you, which can tank your relationships, your mood, your focus, everything. It causes distress and harm to your relationships, finances, and other aspects of your life [1]. In this Insight, I focus on the symptoms of porn addiction.

Common Symptoms of Porn Addiction

Porn addiction symptoms commonly include the following. They interfere with everyday life, emotional health, and relationships, signaling a process addiction pattern similar to other compulsive disorders like video game addiction and gambling [1] [2] [3] [4].

  • Compulsive and frequent viewing of pornography beyond intended limits, neglecting daily responsibilities.
  • Watching porn longer or more frequently than planned.
  • Frequent masturbation (once to several times daily).
  • Feeling shame or guilt but continuing to use.
  • A reduced interest or satisfaction in real-life sexual intimacy.
  • Physical symptoms like disrupted sleep or repetitive strain injuries
  • Causing problems in personal relationships
  • Neglecting work, school, or chores
  • Secrecy and hiding consumption
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, or body aches
  • Developing unrealistic sexual expectations regarding partners

Feelings a Porn Addict May Experience

A porn addict may feel:

  • Guilt, shame, or remorse
  • Hopelessness, powerless over the addictive behavior
  • Depressed, lonely
  • Fearful, anxious
  • Suicidal

Negative Effects of Porn Addiction

There are many negative effects of a porn addiction, including [1]:

  • Emotional costs include guilt, shame, and hopelessness.
  • Using porn as a coping mechanism for negative emotions.
  • Lack of a normal, healthy relationship with your sexual partner and your family
  • Downward school performance from an inability to focus
  • Money problems stemming from paying for porn.
  • Using recreational drugs or drinking excessively
  • Stress, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, or other mental health conditions

While attempting to quit, one may experience irritability, anxiety, cravings, mood swings or other withdrawal symptoms.

Treatment for Porn Addiction

It’s possible to treat porn addiction, typically with a combination of the following:

Psychotherapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps young adults identify triggers, reshape thoughts, and develop coping mechanisms to manage urges and prevent relapse.
  • Other Therapies: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) may all be helpful.

Support Groups

  • Porn Addicts Anonymous provides peer support, accountability, and encouragement critical for long-term recovery.

Medication

Medication may be used to treat conditions such as anxiety or depression. Medication alone is not sufficient.

Holistic Therapies

These assist with the young adult’s overall well-being through lifestyle changes, mindfulness, spiritual counseling, and complementary therapies to enhance recovery outcomes.
